Reflection Nominated for Best Cinematography

Reflection, the narrative short film by Dan Dowding was one of three films nominated for Best Cinematography at the Oxford Film Festival in West Chester, Ohio.

But don't hold your breath... Unfortunately I can tell you that fellow cinematographer Alex Winter and myself did not win the category... but it is almost just as exciting still! This is one of the first couple of festivals to recognize my work as a cinematographer and again brings an external source of satisfaction and motivation to continue my studies and advancement.

Still frame captures from a video file may be seen at my website -HERE-

A Song For Anna: Screens in My Home State Too!

A Song For Anna to Screen at the Oxford International Film Festival

I just found out that another film I shot, A Song For Anna (directed by Eli Katzoff) has also been selected and will screen at the Oxford International Film Festival.

I am very excited and proud to have TWO films I shot be recognized and screened for a cinema audience in the Buckeye State, even if it's not in Northeast Ohio.

I moved from Akron, Ohio to Savannah, Georgia to attend Film School and pursue my cinematography ambitions. The film A Song For Anna was shot within the city and outlaying areas of Savannah, Georgia. In an odd coincidence, the Oxford International Film Festival screening is held at the Savannah Center in West Chester, Ohio.

I unfortunately (and fortunately) still unavailable to attend the festival, as I have a prior commitment which will keep me in the UK for two months of shooting. I have read some good reviews of the festival and wish them the best of luck!

Reflection: Getting Around

Reflection: More Festivals I Was Unaware Of...

As you could tell by reading my past press updates, the film Reflection (directed by Dan Dowding) has been going around the festival circuit quite a bit (IndieSpirit, Southside, ActionOn, etc).

Every time I see Dan, I get updates and news... but apparently not all the news! Just found out the film has been accepted and screened in multiple festivals I had been previously unaware of! Hopefully this is the last Reflection update, which successfully catches up the past to the present.

Official Selection of the Daytona Beach Film Festival 2008

Official Selection of FEAR Animation & Film Effects Festival 2008 (New Orleans)

Official Selection Victory Media Network 2009 (Dallas, TX)
(The 1st outdoor digital 'gallery' in the world, located in Victory Park)

Official Selection Foyle Film Festival 2009 (Northern Ireland!)
Official Selection Digital Media Festival 2009 (Online/Australia)

It's very exciting to see a film you worked on go to all these great festivals, but sad that I cannot accompany them. Dallas looked like an innovative and unusual way to watch a film, while I'd have loved to go to Northern Ireland for the Foyle Film Festival. I was just in Ireland about a month ago, and will be back for a documentary in about another month, but alas I'll be back in the States come November, when the festival begins.

I served as one of the two cinematographers on Reflection, along with Alex Winter with whom I've shot two other films with.

"Game Show" Screened at the Kent Film Festival

Game Show Screens at Kent Film Festival

The short film GameShow, directed by Vin Carubia, was accepted and recently screened at the Kent Film Festival in Kent, Connecticut.

I served as Director of Photography on the project. The first half of the film represents a depressing reality. It was shot on a Panasonic HVX200 with 35mm optics for shallow depth. The second half of the film, the GameShow, was shot on the Sony F900 and is more television like with brighter and deeper Depth of Field.

Stay tuned for more information on this film. Stills are available on my website at www.RyanPatrickOHara.com .

Indie Spirit Film Festival: Reflection

***Attention! You are not seeing double! ***

Update regarding the film "Reflection" (2008)
Director: Dan Dowding
Directors of Photography: Alex Winter & Ryan Patrick O'Hara

Reflection has recently been accepted
to the Indie Spirit Film Festival!!!

Something look familiar? Yes, this post is almost identical to my last post because now there are TWO films I shot last year which will be showing at the 2009 Indie Spirit Film Festival!!! With two films in the festival, I have recently considered going... although, as a D.P., going to festivals usually just results in squirming around in the theater, as the film is projected with improper color or black levels!
"The Indie Spirit Film Festival is an annual event for filmmakers (professionals and students) and film lovers alike, with a superb program of feature films, shorts, docs, animation, and many other films from around the world."-ISFF website

From the Indie Spirit Film Festival email:

Savannah Film Festival 2008

During the annual Savannah Film Festival, (held in Savannah Georgia), SCAD held its student showcase which "features film and digital media work by several of the college's most talented students."

In the indefinite wisdom possessed by my alum college, SCAD, they did not post a schedule within the showcase. From sources who I have spoken to, it seems at least three of the films I shot were showcased this year. "A Song For Anna", "Reflection", and "A Kiss Goodnight." The film "My Deer Friend", on which I served as camera operator, played during the festival in addition. The student Showcase is part of a promotion effort for the schools department of Film & Digital Media.

A Song For Anna: Awards?!

"A Song For Anna" was a short film I shot early 2008. I served as the Director of Photography. The director, Eli Catzoff had submitted the short film into several festivals, many of which we have not heard back from yet.

There have been some positive news thus far, "A Song For Anna has been accepted to the Dam Short Film Festival" in Boulder City, Navada. More info on the festival can be found here:
http://www.damshortfilm.org/2009/2009.htm

I am not sure what we stand to gain at the Dam Short Film Festival, but exposure is priceless, so if I am free from work, I might make the trek to Nevada and see how people like our film.

In other news, we apparently won some kind of award from a 'Christian Film Festival' that our college had submitted us to without our knowledge. I am not sure what we won or the exact name of the festival, but according to sources we won something...cool.

Stay tuned for more, as we have many festivals yet to hear back from.

Best,

-RPO
